Is Member of the European Academy of Sciences. BSc in Natural Sciences and PhD (1972) from the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of Lausanne University. Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Cell Biology and Clinical Cancer Research Institute of Berne University, at the Institute of Cellular Pathology of Louvain University, and at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York. Founder of the Laboratory of Cellular Pathology and the Institute for Scientific Interdisciplinary Studies, Locarno (Switzerland). Since 1982 teaches cell biology at Universities of Lausanne, Turin, Bari, and Naples. He gained international renown through pioneer papers on fractal geometry applied to cell biology and human cancer. Academic collaboration with the Department of Mathematical Physics of the University of Ulm aimed at investigating the role of fractal geometry in biology and medicine and developing mathematical softwares for fractal analysis. Founder, chairman, and editor of the International Symposium "Fractals in Biology and Medicine", started in 1993 at Locarno-Ascona. He had the great privilege of being a close friend of Professor Benoît Mandelbrot, to whose memory the complete series of proceedings volumes Fractals in Biology and Medicine are dedicated.
