Dr Tim Johnson is a lecturer in the Department for Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics at Heriot-Watt University,
one of the country's leading centres of research into the mathematics of finance. Between 2006 and 2011 he was the
RCUK Academic Fellow in Financial Mathematics and before embarking on a PhD in Applied Probability he worked in oil
exploration. His research interests centre on developing practical mathematical techniques to help decision making
in uncertain situations. Associated with his technical work he is interested in the interplay between finance,
science and democracy.
