The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been going on since the creation of the state of Israel, in 1948. The Oslo Agreement, signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in1993, brought about the establishment in 1994 of the Palestinian National Authority and a progressive self-rule of the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank. The unilateral withdrawal of the Israelis from the Gaza Strip in 2005, provoked a sharp division between Hamas and Al Fatah. The rule of Gaza by Hamas resulted in continuous clashes with Israel that still go on today.
