The Phoenix robot has stopped working but the consensus in the scientific world is general about the relevance of this space mission to Mars. And great is also the expectation for the next research programs on the Red Planet. These results have been backed by the usual setup of the American space organisation, the NASA, joined by some other space Agencies, like the Canadian one, and some European bodies ( German and Swiss), plus companies in the aerospace industry. Quite relevant the role played by some universities, in particular by the University of Arizona, where it works the physicist Peter Smith, Principal Investigator and Project Leader of the Phoenix Mission.
This is not the first time for Smith. In the ‘70’s and ’80’s of past century, he had proposed innovative models and tools for the study of the surface and atmosphere of other planets. In 2003, his proposal for an explorative mission on the North Pole of Mars had won in a very competitive selection, starting this spectacular adventure followed since the spacecraft launch in August 2007 with interest and enthusiasm all around the world.
