Hamadi Jebali is the Secretary of the Tunisian political party Al-Nahdha, the main party in Tunisia. Jebali was put in prison for 16 years under the regime of Ben Alì insurrection and membership in an illegal organization. He is a journalist and former editor of Al-Fajr. He was tried with 279 other suspected Al-Nahda members or sympathizers. The trials were heavily criticised by foreign human rights monitoring groups. Jebali was considered a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.
