A Hollywood filmmaker is producing what promises to be a spectacular cinematic tour of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, filmed in 3D.Called IMAX Jerusalem 3D and scheduled for worldwide release in 2013, the movie includes very rare aerial footage throughout Israel and the West Bank, as well as scenes of the Holy sites and little-known parts of city.
It is executive produced by Jake Eberts, whose previous cinematic credits include City of Joy, Dances with Wolves and Driving Miss Daisy. He has been assisted by a team of other producers responsible for ground-breaking documentaries. The filmmakers, who belong to Arcane/Cosmic Pictures, say they have sought to approach “this crossroads of the world” in an inclusive way, across political, academic and religious lines, in the hope that audiences will be “inspired to reconsider their assumptions about this vital part of the world.”“Our goal is to enable everyone, whether knowledgeable or simply curious about Jerusalem, to discover something new and exciting about the city,” say the movie makers. The crew, who completed filming in April, had a rare opportunity to film inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and managed to obtain over 100 minutes of aerial footage. Knowing that the Old City of Jerusalem is a strict no-fly zone and that low altitude filming permits had not been granted for many years, they managed to obtain the necessary permission after working for several months with various government ministries, police and military, as well as religious and community leaders. To capture the “energy and beauty” of Jerusalem in 3D, the crew filmed many scenes with a steadicam equipment that allowed them to obtain “extraordinary images” of the old city as if the cameraman is “gliding through its streets.”Created in the late 1960s by a group of Canadian filmmakers, the IMAX format claims to still be the best quality film presentation ever created. A combination of extremely high-resolution images, state-of-the-art projectors, giant screens, unique theatre geometry and six-channel surround sound, is said to make it “the most immersive film experience in the world.”See the preview on the next page.
