HHS MANDATE/ LAWSUIT FILED: Notre Dame v. Sebelius

Editors

5/22/2012

Message from Fr. Jenkins, President of Notre Dame University, on the lawsuit the university has filed against the HHS mandate which requires Catholic institutions to provide contraception.

In January 2012, the Health and Human Services Department issued a rule forcing nearly all private health plans to include coverage for all FDA - approved prescription contraceptive drugs and devices, some of which cause abortion, as well as surgical sterilization. This rule applies to almost all religious organizations as well. The U. S. bishops immediately spoke out against the rule and called on the Obama administration to add a conscience clause to exempt those that are opposed to those drugs from having to provide them in their insurance plans. This feature collects articles and opinions on the debate.
